JanuaryNew Year, New You
We closed last year by asking members for thoughts about 2020.
Here's a selection of the things we missed most, that we took for granted and couldn't have.  And how we found the silver linings and positives from even the most challenging times in our lives!
 New Year, New Quiz
In two sections. First, the traditional look back at last year. Then, for those of us who may wish to put that firmly behind us, some general knowledge.
New Quiz answers

Here's a varied mixture of reading. Why not try something different this year!

Wrath of Olympus by E M Kkoulla (ISBN: 9798566666396)
A fantastic debut novel by a local author, set in a world where the Roman Empire never fell. In the Province of Britannia, ruled by descendants of King Arthur and on the brink of an industrial revolution, young Maia Abella is on the run. The city authorities and the Royal Navy are both on her trail. Meanwhile, the Gods are making their moves. And not all of them are friendly.

Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day by Captain Tom Moore (ISBN: 9780241486108)
From the foothills of the Yorkshire Dales, through the battlefields of Burma, to the final astonishing lap of his garden as a centenarian. He has inspired us to believe anything is possible by reminding us all it is never, ever too late.

Artemis by Andy Weir (ISBN: 9781785030253)
Ever had a bad day? Try having one on the moon. Welcome to Artemis, the first city on the moon. Population 2,000. Mostly tourists, some criminals. Our heroine, Jazz Bashara, is one of the criminals. But though planning a crime in 1\6 gravity may be more fun, it's a lot more dangerous. This fast-paced space heist from the author of The Martian is packed with real science - a real page-turner!

Angela Carter's Book Of Fairy Tales (ISBN: 9781844081738)
Once upon a time ... fairy tales weren't meant just for children! This spicey collection of folk stories from around the world contains lyrical tales, bloody tales and hilariously funny and ripely bawdy stories - and no dippy princesses or soppy fairies. Instead, we have pretty maids and old crones; crafty women and bad girls; enchantresses and midwives; rascal aunts and odd sisters. A celebration of strong minds, low cunning, black arts and dirty tricks!

It's all about Feeling Good!
Get all your clothes and shoes out of drawers and wardrobes - spend a day trying them on. Anything that doesn't flatter put in a charity bag. If you bought a pair of shoes that pinch, admit defeat: charity bag.
If you're someone who yo-yos between sizes, bag up the 'too big' things in one bag and the 'too small' ones in another. Put them in the loft, or somewhere out of sight out of mind, and revisit when needed.
The new you is all about feeling good in what you're wearing even if you're stuck at home. If you haven't worn something for over a year, then maybe it needs to go to charity too. Apparently, we wear only 25% of our clothes 75% of the time!
Try a new craft or brush up some neglected skills with Origami for Beginners.
February 1st - 21st the Women's Institute will Show The Love - our annual celebration of everything we care about and want to protect from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. To find out about how to take part, and make your own pom pom green heart, look at the information and ideas in the Green Heart Action Pack.
Unwind and relax with paints or crayons and this lovely mandala pattern.
