President's Welcome

What a mixed bag of weather we have had. One minute we needed sun cream and our plants needed watering, and the next we were looking for winter coats and hoping our flowers wouldn't become frost damaged!
Your committee have been working on ways to keep us connected and understand April's zoom workshops went down well. We hope you will enjoy our next project - a sunflower growing competition. I would like to thank Carol for her hard work creating the pack for us all to enjoy.
Our next hope is that we will all be able to meet soon on our two saved dates: 19th July and 16th August. The ideas for each occasion remain fluid as the situation progresses and the WI guidelines change. Fingers crossed, let's look forward to meeting up in person.

MayArmchair gardening for a rainy day - try this Plant Quiz or a Gardening word search.
Plant Quiz answers.
Are you one of those people for whom the name of that plant is on the tip of your tongue? Try the 'Plant Snap' app. Basically you install the free app and take a picture on it. It will then set about identifying the flower or plant you have photographed. Isn't technology great!

Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland by Lisa Schneidau (ISBN: 9780750981217)
The islands of Britain and Ireland hold a rich heritage of plant folklore and wisdom, from the magical yew tree to the bad-tempered dandelion. Here are traditional tales about the trees and plants that shape our landscapes and our lives through the seasons. They explore the complex relationship between people and plants, this is an essential collection of stories for anyone interested in botany, the environment and our living heritage.

MayIf you were inspired by our April zoom demonstration and your starter kit, here is Bev's recommended Introduction: Beginner's Guide to Needle Felting by Susanna Wallis (ISBN 9781844482511)
Learn how to make charming cards, pictures, jewellery, a bird and even a figure from wool.

By now you should have received your Sunflower card. We hope you will all take part in the little competition and have a go at growing your sunflower seeds, and we hope to hear from you about your progress and any tips you might want to share. Of course, if you’re hoping to win one of the prizes you may wish to keep your green finger growing secrets to yourself until after the winners are announced! Haha.
We are also hoping you’ll share with us any unusual comments you get about yourself for you to write on your Sunflower's petals. Julie says "I asked my friend's granddaughter to fill in a petal for me and she put ‘clean, tidy and smells nice!!’ Oh from the mouths of babes..."
And if you need some inspiration, take a look at the world record!
Good luck everyone.

Big knitters needed for little hats! Innocent are once again supporting Age UK by adding knitted hats to their smoothie bottles and donating 25p to Age UK for each one sold, so your little hats will make a big difference. There are some great patterns for knitting and crotchet on the Big Knit website.
Here are some ideas for home-made natural hand creams - moisturising and scented with essential oils. Pamper your skin after planting or weeding in the garden.
